Do certain people actually have a “knack” for learning foreign languages? Anecdotal evidence would suggest that some people are indeed able to learn languages faster and more efficiently than others. One way of looking at such aptitude is the identification of characteristics of successful language learners. Risk-taking behavior, memory efficiency, intelligent guessing, willingness to communicate, low anxiety, and ambiguity tolerance are but a few of the many variables that have been cited

Historically, research on language aptitude has been a roller-coaster ride. John Carroll’s (Carroll & Sapon, 1959) pioneering work on aptitude, embodied in the Modern Language Aptitude Test (MLAT), began the quest. The MLAT asserted the predictability of number learning, sound discrimination, pattern discernment, and memorization for future success in a foreign language. This test, and some others, were used for some time in such contexts as Peace Corps volunteer training programs and military communications courses to help predict successful language learners.

Esta questão trata da transformação de uma pergunta direta em discurso indireto, que é um tópico bastante frequente em provas de língua inglesa em concursos e exames. O objetivo é transformar a frase interrogativa 'Do some people actually have a 'knack' for learning foreign languages?' para uma forma indireta adequada.

No discurso indireto, quando temos perguntas do tipo sim ou não, normalmente usamos expressões como 'if' ou 'whether' para introduzir a pergunta. Além disso, modificamos a estrutura da frase, transformando a pergunta direta em uma declaração.

    Analisando as alternativas:
    - A) 'when certain people...' introduz uma pergunta sobre tempo, que não corresponde ao sentido original.
    - B) 'why do certain people...' mantém a estrutura interrogativa e adiciona 'do', o que está incorreto no discurso indireto; além disso, o questionamento muda para 'por quê'.
    - C) 'what do certain people...' novamente mantém a estrutura interrogativa e muda o sentido para 'o quê', que não é o foco da pergunta original.
    - D) 'if is it true that some people...' tem um problema na construção; o correto seria 'if it is true that...'.
    - E) 'if certain people actually have a knack...' apresenta uma construção correta para frase indireta interrogativa e mantém o sentido original.

Portanto, a alternativa correta para transformar a pergunta direta em discurso indireto é a opção E.
