In English teaching, different methodologies cater to specific learning objectives, ranging from focusing on linguistic structures to applying skills in practical contexts.
Based on the description of the activity below, select the CORRECT alternative that identifies the methodology used by the teacher.
In an advanced English class, the teacher asks students to plan a fictional trip to an English-speaking country. They must research destinations, create a detailed itinerary, and present the plan orally, including arguments to justify logistical and cultural choices. During the activity, the teacher provides linguistic support when necessary and delivers corrective feedback at the end.

SCHOOL RULES.
The British College of Benalmádena provides its students with an environment in which they can feel safe, cared for and supported, in which they can adequately develop their individual skills, helping them to face the modern world in an autonomous and critical way, preparing them to participate positively in society and in the various professional fields to which they may one day have access.

To achieve these objectives, we encourage our students to accept responsibility and be tolerant, to understand the point of view of others, to help their peers and to maintain a high standard of work, to the best of their ability.

In addition, they must maintain a code of conduct based essentially on respect for their teachers and their peers, as well as on some basic rules that, although obvious, are important to remember:

1. Students must arrive at school on time.

2. During school hours, the pupils are the responsibility of the school and their teachers and therefore, they must always follow their indications.

3. A lack of respect towards peers or teachers will not be tolerated at any time.

4. No type of bullying, neither psychological, physical or cyber will be tolerated under any circumstances.

5. To help their fellow students whenever necessary, to protect the younger ones and be friendly towards everybody is a golden rule for our students.

6. All the school uniform must be worn by all students throughout the school.

7. Students should not bring any valuable items to school. If for any reason they have to do so, they must hand it into the office for safekeeping.

8. Mobiles phones are TOTALLY FORBIDDEN.

9. The school keeps an exhaustive record of the absences of the students and immediately contacts the parents if a child is absent. We therefore beg parents to notify the school of any absences that they might know of in advance, such as doctor’s and dentist’s appointments, etc.

10. Any work missed through absence will have to be made up, including internal examinations.

11. Obviously, smoking or drinking alcohol is TOTALLY FORBIDDEN in school.

12. Students must look after their own belongings and respect others’, as well as the school’s.

After years of inattention, the whole world has just awaken to what is happening in the Amazon. “Save the rain forest” is the cry of conservationists, politicians, and rock stars. The movement has already sparked a confrontation between rich industrials nations, which are new converts to the environmental cause, and the poorer nations of the Third World which consider outside interference as an assault on their sovereignty. Scientists think that destruction of the Amazon could lead to climatic chaos. Because of the huge volume of clouds it generates, the Amazon system plays a major role in the way the sun’s heat is distributed around the globe. Any disturbance of this process could produce unpredictable effects. As an American Senator has just said: “The devastation is unbelievable. It’s one of the great tragedies of all history”. Text: “Why do people collect?”

Petra Engels owns 19,571 erasers, Carol Vaughn has 1,221 bars of soap, and Ralf Shrőder has a collection of 14,502 packets of sugar. Many people love to collect things, but why? Psychologists and collectors have different opinions.

The psychologist Carl Jung believed that collecting is part of our ancient human history. Thousands of years ago, humans collected nuts and berries. They kept them carefully and ate them when there was no food. The best collectors survived long cold winters or seasons without rain. Their genes passed to future generations. Nowadays, we still have a collecting instinct.

Historian Philipp Bloom has a different opinion. He thinks collectors want to make something that will remain after their death. By bringing many similar items together, the collector gains historical importance. Sometimes their collections become museums or libraries, for example, Henry Huntington, who founded a library in Los Angeles to house his collection of books.

Author Steve Roach thinks that people collect things to remember their childhood. Many children collect things, but few have enough money to buy the things they really want, and they lose interest. In later life, they remember their collections fondly. Now, they have enough money and opportunity to find special items, and they start collecting again. This way, they can re-live and enjoy their childhood years.

Art collector, Werner Muensterberger, agrees that collecting is linked to childhood. But he believes we collect in order to feel safe and secure. While babies hold blankets or toys to feel safe when their mother isn’t there, adults collect things to stop feeling lonely or anxious.

Autograph collector Mark Baker agrees that collecting is emotional, but he doesn’t collect to reduce anxiety. “For me, it’s the excitement,” he says. “I love trying to get a famous person’s autograph. Sometimes I succeed, and sometimes I fail. Also, by collecting autographs, I feel connected to famous people. I don’t just watch them on television. I actually meet them.”

These are just a few reasons for collecting. Do you know any people with collections? Why do they collect?

Leia o trecho do conto "The Black Cat" escrito por Edgar Allan Poe e publicado em 1845.

To those who have cherished an affection for a faithful and sagacious dog, 1 need hardly be at the trouble of explaining the nature or the intensity of the gratification thus derivable. There is something in the unselfish and self-sacrificing love of a brute, which goes directly to the heart of him who has had frequent occasion to test the paltry friendship and gossamer fidelity of mere Man.

Text 1

Companies know how we think

Companies can now find out exactly how you think through the science of neuromarketing. Advertisers are currently collaborating with scientists to test their products directly on our brains. Some experts believe that one in ten TV commercials have already been designed using neuromarketing.

The reasons are obvious. The technique allows companies to discover exactly what people like about their products. For example, when we eat a type of potato chip, it may be the color, the flavor, or the pleasant noise it makes when you crunch it in your mouth that we like most.

In order ................ tap into what’s going ................ in consumers’ brains, it all begins laboratories and office buildings.

Groups of volunteers submit themselves to a simple process. Wearing a special headset called an electrode cap, they watch commercials or test products. The caps allow researchers to monitor brain activity. When something attracts the attention of the volunteers, this is highlighted on a computer. They literally use this device to read the minds of their volunteers. This may sound a little scary, but advertisers are just tapping into our existing thoughts and desires. And that’s what advertisers have always tried to do.

Previously, companies would give people a survey or questionnaire to complete in order to research their customers. The problem was that people didn’t always tell the truth. They may not want to be critical of a product or advertisement because they don’t want to upset the interviewer. The electrode cap overcomes this problem. It shows when someone really is interested in something.

Neuromarketing is also used to develop packaging for the world’s most famous brands. The aim is to make their products stand out in a busy marketplace. This will become standard as more companies capitalize on the technology. With millions invested in advertising, companies simply cannot afford to hope that their ads and products will be a success. If they can find out what we think first, and change their products to make them more successful, they will quickly pay off the high cost of neuromarketing and dominate their market.

This activity can be set up without the trainees opening their books

1. You need one copy of the text below for each pair of trainees. Stick the copies around the room. One person in each pair should run to the text, read a chunk, go back to their partner and dictate it. The listener should write down what they hear and the runner should go back for the next part. The winners are the first pair to finish. As pairs finish, take a copy of the text off the wall and ask them to compare what they have written with the original. Pairs who finish early can consider the question at the end of the text.

You get a text message, you read it and you text back. You read an interesting newspaper story and you tell someone about it. You go to a lecture and you take notes. And you pass on some juicy gossip that you just heard. So, outside the classroom, language skills are not always used in isolation. They tend to be combined. Think back so the last lesson you taught. Were any skills combined?

2. Allow the trainees a little time to gather their ideas before reporting back in open class.

Babies cry with an accent

A study found newborns cry with the melody of their parent’s language.

By ABC News

Think newborns just eat, sleep and wail the same way across the world? That’s not so, according to a new study which found that babies cry with an accent within the first week of life.

By recording cries of 60 babies born to French or German parents, researchers discovered that babies cry with the same “prosody” or melody used in their native language by the second day of life.

French newborns in the study ended their cries with a lilt at the end typically heard in French. German babies, however, started their cries intensely and dropped off at the end – much like the emphasis their German parents put in a sentence, according to a study published Thursday in Current Biology.

Experts in child development say the most exciting part of this discovery is not that infants recognize the melody of their language, but that the newborns may have the ability to use what they heard in the womb to then control their cries.
