Read the text below to answer question 17–18.

Alzheimer?s disease

Alzheimer?s disease (AD) is a form of dementia, which is a brain disorder. It damages nerve cells in the brain. This affects your ability to remember things, think clearly, and care for yourself. AD begins slowly, and symptoms get worse with time. Eventually, a person with AD might need help in many areas, including eating and getting dressed. For some people in the early or middle stages of the disease, medicine might help symptoms, such as memory loss, from getting worse for a limited time. Other drugs may help people feel less worried or depressed. Dealing with Alzheimer?s disease can be extremely difficult, but planning ahead and getting support can lighten the load. AD usually begins after age 60, and risk goes up with age. The risk is also higher if a family member has had AD. Scientists are working to better understand AD. Ongoing studies are looking at whether some things can help prevent or delay the disease. Areas that are being explored include exercise, eating omega–3 fatty acids, and keeping your brain active.                                                  To tip, or not to tip?
The  word  tip  comes  from  an  old English slang. Americans

People  who  work in these  places  often get paid low wages.

Our (Im)perfect bOdIes
Since I write a lot about positive body image, you’d think that I am well over the idea that weight
should be something that I allow to define my life. Yet, the vestiges of my past life as a woman
obsessed with weight still linger. A good example is vacation pictures. If I show you pictures of all
the places I have been in my Iife, I can give you minute details about the place itself, the food, the
5 sights and the weather. I can also tell you something else simply by looking at those pictures: the
exact number on the scale I was at that particular time in my life.
Sometimes my past catches up with me. I like to think of myself as a recovering weight-a-holic.
The fear of being overweight is a constant one of despair at not being personally successful in
controlling your own body. What good is being in control of finances, major companies and
10 businesses if you’re not in control of your body?! Silly idea, right? And yet that is exactly the
unconscious thought many intelligent women have.
Feeling satisfied with your appearance makes a tremendous amount of difference in how you
present yourself to the world. Some women live their entire lives on their perception of their
physical selves. But I’ve been there, done that. The hell with that idea! Personally, I became tired
15 of living my Iife this way.
My friend is an art historian who specializes in the Renaissance period. Talking with him recently gave
me a perspective on body image. As we walked through the permanent exhibit of Renaissance
Art in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, he pointed out the paintings done of women.
The women came in all sizes, all shapes. Some were curvier than others, but all were beautiful.
20 Some had what we refer to as love handles; some had soft, fuller stomachs that had never suffered
through crunches in a gym. Though I had seen them many times, it was actually refreshing to view
them in a new light.
We are led to believe our self-worth must be a reflection of our looks. So, in essence, if we don’t
believe we look good, we assume we have no worth! Yet, self-worth should have nothing to do
25 with looks and everything to do with an innate feeling that you really are worth it. You are worth
going after your dreams, you are worth being in a good relationship, you are worth living a life that
fulfills and nourishes you, and you are certainly worthy of being a successful woman.
There is a quote attributed to Michelangelo that I’ve always admired. When a friend complimented
him on the glorious Sistine Chapel, the great artist, referring to his art in the feminine form, was
said to have replied: “She is worthy of admiration simply because she exists; perfection and
imperfection together”.

The integral approach strategies adopted by
Favela-Bairro consist of proposals of integrated and
participative actions. The path that goes from welfare
to work should combine programs and services for
human and social development with labor and incomegeneration
opportunities. To be viable, however, social
promotion interventions should be focused on
geographical areas with a high concentration of poverty,
specifically on the poorest families.
An intersectoral decentralized and participative
approach can produce synergetic effects capable of
providing greater impact for poverty and inequality
reduction policies, and capable of contributing to their
sustainability.
Although Favela-Bairro has been based on the idea
of integrated urban infrastructure interventions, initially
the program did not incorporate all the basic components
of an integral approach strategy. These components
weregradually incorporated into its design as a result
of the participatory process and the transformations
that occurred in the municipal administration.
Favela-Bairro is the result of an evolving process
that resulted in the creation of a typical integral
development model with a territorial base that
incorporates life-cycle perspectives.
Rio de Janeiro inhabitants, either living in favelas
or not, recognize the importance of the Favela-Bairro
program. A public opinion poll carried out in 2003 asked
cariocas (as Rio residents are called) to choose from
a list of governmental programs the one to which the
next mayor should give priority. Favela-Bairro was
chosen in first place in all three rounds of the survey.
The same institute asked respondents about the most
important project for the city, and again Favela-Bairro
ranked first: 26.1 percent of respondents have elected
Favela-Bairro as more important than programs such
as minimum income, popularrestaurants, and even
essential works in major city roads.

Mr. Law´s invention

Less than a year ago the judges on the reality programme Dragon´s Den rejected his invention. Now inventor Rob Law is having the last laugh after a product considered "worthless" on the BBC television programme for young entrepreneurs has proved a huge commercial hit. Mr. Law, 29, from Bath, spent 11 years – and 17,000 pounds of his own money – refining his design for a wheelie suitcase which doubles up as a child´s ride-on toy. The plastic Trunki case is designed to allow youngsters aged three to six to take their own bag on holiday – and sit on it when they are tired. But when Mr. Law appeared on Dragons´ Den last September, he was given a hard time by the famously unfriendly panel of investors. Businessman Theo Paphitis ridiculed the product after managing to pull off one of the straps. His colleague Deborah Meadon, head of a holiday firm, declared bluntly that there was no market for the case. And the notoriously brusque tele-communications tycoon Peter Jones declared: "I meet people like you all the time – you think you have something. I tell you, you don´t". The panel declined Mr. Law´s offer to give up 10 percent of his new company in return for a 100,000 pounds investment – an offer which valued the firm at 1 million. However, it now appears that the experts were wrong. After a succession of positive press reviews, Mr. Law has sold 85,000 of his trunki suitcases. It is marketed in 22 countries via a network of distributors. Retailing at 25 pounds, it has proved a hit at several high street stores. Mr Law said: "When I went on to the programme I was full of confidence that I was going to get the investment I needed. But they were rude and obnoxious and just focused on the strap, which was actually something that was easily fixed. I was terrified that by appearing on the programme I may have ruined my company before it even started. But afterwards we had loads of hits on the website from people who said they thought it was a brilliant idea. Now I am absolutely delighted to have proved the Dragons wrong. It just goes to show you should never give up. Mr. Law also revealed that during filming he managed to sell two of the suitcases to Australian panellist Richard Farleigh, who wanted to invest 100,000 pounds in return for half of the company. But Mr. Law rejected the deal. He declined to say exactly how much the company – which is 100% owned by him - is now worth, but said it was more than a million.

Knowledge and the library
It was not until the development of monastic libraries in Europe around 1200 that humanity amassed in a single place what approached the collective wisdom and knowledge of the age. Libraries may be exchanges of information and market places for ideas but they are also the buildings which contain the bulk of human knowledge. Or, at least they were until the electronic digitally stored information revolution of the 1980s.
Now knowledge is virtually everywhere; it has broken free of the constraint of buildings. Today if you were today to destroy all theworld’s libraries, it is unlikely that more than 20% of human knowledge would be lost. Certainly, a large amount of archival material would disappear forever, but a substantial volume of knowledge would survive. If a library is a repository of knowledge, this is now just one of its functions. The library’s prime function is now making that knowledge available and encouraging exchange and reflection upon it.
Electronic knowledge is nowadays available to everybody – in the home, workplace, airport terminal, school, and so on. The Internet has liberated the library; nevertheless, it has not removed the justification for library facilities.

American plans to buy up assets that are clogging the fi nancial system lack detail but no one doubts that a massive government intervention is coming. In Europe jittery investors have no such reassurance. European governments have yet to respond publicly to calls from Hank Paulson, the treasury secretary, to follow his lead. They look set to keep faith with the approach that they have used to handle the crisis so far ? staving off liquidity worries by allowing banks to use facilities at central banks to swap their assets in exchange for ready cash. That makes many watchers nervous. The crisis in America has dramatically grown from one of liquidity to one of solvency as well. Lehman Brothers had access to the Federal Reserve´s discount window, after all, but still went under. The burning question now is whether banks have enough capital. On some measures, European banks look pretty well capitalized. The average tier–one ratio, which measures capital based on the riskiness of bank assets, stood at 8% in the fi rst half of the year. That looks solid enough, if you assume that banks have a good handle on risk.

In paragraph 1, the author refers to a massive government intervention which
