                       Selecting the Olympic Sports
1               There are 28 sports permitted in the Summer Olympic
Games. The list of Olympic Sports has many of the world’s
best-loved sports on it, such as baseball, judo, soccer, tennis,
and volleyball. This list of sports hadn’t changed in 70 years,
5     and the process for changing these sports is long and difficult.
That is why it was surprising news when the International
Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that it was studying
new sports for the list. At a meeting in Singapore in 2005, the
IOC voted on each of the 28 sports from the 2004 Olympic
10  Games in Athens, Greece. Twenty-six of the 28 sports were
selected for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, which took
place in London, England. The two sports that did not receive
50 percent of the votes were baseball and softball.
Because these two sports were not selected, the IOC
15  started the process of voting for two new sports. The five
sports to select from were roller skating, golf, rugby, squash,
and karate. After the first vote, karate and squash were
submitted to the IOC for the final vote.
To become an Olympic sport, a sport must receive two-
20   thirds of the votes of the IOC. When the final vote took place,
squash received 39 “yes” votes and 63 “no” votes. Karate
received 38 “yes” votes and 63 “no” votes. It meant that
neither squash nor karate would feature in the 2012 Olympic
Games. And sad fans didn’t believe that their sports could be
25   selected for the 2016 Olympic Games.

‘I wish they could be saved’:
The victims of India’s poisonous dust

Silicosis, which kills thousands around the world, is caused by inhaling silica dust found in rock, sand, quartz and many building materials. It can lead to breathing difficulties, regular coughing, chest pains and, sometimes, tuberculosis and other chest infections.
Two years ago, at the age of 17, Urmila Yadav, from the village of Budhpura, located in the north-western state of Rajasthan, became one of the youngest certified cases of silicosis in India. Her case is singular; even in this village where mining and quarry1 work is the only occupation and silicosis is a commonplace disease that strikes almost every family, it is mostly men who are affected.
Rajasthan has been the epicentre of silicosis in India. The number of silicosis certified patients in the state, according to government data, is 8 441 (the figures are available up to April 2017). Actual numbers are likely to be much higher, claim advocacy groups. It is the only state to have a monetary relief mechanism for certified patients, in place since 2013; however, the onus is on workers to get a diagnosis and prove their occupational history, which is challenging in an unregulated industry like mining in India.
For a young teenage girl like Urmila to have silicosis is “quite an unusual case”, says Dr Vinod Jangid, responsible for diagnosing silicosis at the medical college in the district of Kota. There could be more children with silicosis but the government will hesitate to certify young people. “If children are diagnosed with silicosis, it means they are either living close to the mines, or they are working in the mines, both of which are illegal.”
Urmila began to work in the stone quarries next to her village in her childhood. It is common here for men to work in mines and for women and children to supplement the family earnings by carving cobblestones by hand. Most of them work in quarries and head back there after classes. “There are many girls in Budhpura who do this work. Some are 15 or 16 years, and some even younger. I wish they can be saved from this work,” Urmila says.

If You Can’t Master English, Try Globish

PARIS — It happens all the time: during an airport delay the man to the left, a Korean perhaps, starts talking to the man opposite, who might be Colombian, and soon they are chatting away in what seems to be English. But the native English speaker sitting between them cannot understand a word.

They don’t know it, but the Korean and the Colombian are speaking Globish, the latest addition to the 6,800 languages that are said to be spoken across the world. Not that its inventor, Jean-Paul Nerrière, considers it a proper language.

“It is not a language, it is a tool,” he says. “A language is the vehicle of a culture. Globish doesn’t want to be that at all. It is a means of communication.”

Nerrière doesn’t see Globish in the same light as utopian efforts such as Kosmos, Volapuk, Novial or staunch Esperanto. Nor should it be confused with barbaric Algol (for Algorithmic language). It is a sort of English lite: a means of simplifying the language and giving it rules so it can be understood by all.

NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF POLLUTION
01 The term "pollutant" refers to any substance that, when introduced to an area, has a negative impact on
the environment and its organisms. Pollution can impact human health, air, water, land and entire ecosystems.
Most sources of pollution result from human activity.
Impact on Human Health
05 Many pollutants have a negative impact on human health. For example, pollutants in the air, such as ozone
or particulates in the air, may lead to respiratory health problems such as asthma, chronic bronchitis and
decreased lung function. Drinking contaminated water may lead to stomach and other digestive problems.
Pollutants such as mercury can accumulate in fish and seafood and can lead to serious health problems,
especially for vulnerable populations such as children or pregnant women. Pollutants in the soil, such as
10 contamination by heavy metals, toxins or lead, can lead to serious health problems, including cancer and
developmental problems in children.
Impact on Air
One of the most common sources of air pollution results from the burning of fossil fuels, such as vehicle
and factory emissions. These emissions are a major contributor to smog, a mass of particulate matter than
15 hangs like a cloud over many major cities and industrial areas. A second effect of air pollution is acid rain,
which forms when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide in the air combine with oxygen, water and other chemicals in the air.
This combination decreases the pH of rainwater, which is typically pH neutral, and turns it
acid. Acid rain can lead to the death of trees, fish kills in lakes and damage to statues, monuments and
building faces.
20 Impact on Water
Water pollution may result from run-off from places such as agricultural fields, construction sites or factories;
oil spills; sewage disposals; and the accumulation of trash. Water pollution has a deleterious effect
on the native plant and animal species that call bodies of water home. Run-off from agricultural fields can
lead to algal blooms which choke out other plants and decrease the amount of available oxygen for species
25 of fish and other organisms. Chemicals in the water can affect animal development, leading to deformities,
such as extra legs in frogs. Oil spills kill native species of animals including waterfowl and mammal species.
Sewage overflow can contaminate sources of human drinking water, leading to serious health problems, as
mentioned above. The accumulation of trash in bodies of water may also lead to animal deaths resulting
from becoming tangled in plastic items such as plastic bags, fishing wire and other debris.
30 Impact on Land
Pollutants in the soil most often result from industrial sources. Particularly insidious soil pollutants include lead,
PCBs and asbestos. These pollutants may negatively affect human health and native plant and animal health.
Pesticide use can also impact the land. One undesired impact of using pesticides is the death of
native plant and animal species that also reside in the area.
35 Impact on Ecosystems
Because each type of pollution (air, water, land) does not occur separately from one another, entire
ecosystems are often impacted. For example, the use of pesticides or fertilizers on land may negatively impact terrestrial
species of plants and animals. When these materials are introduced to nearby bodies of water, they impact aquatic species
of plants and animals. Thus, curbing pollution in one area of an ecosystem
40 can also help protect another part of the ecosystem

One frequently overlooked area in planning is technical
reviews and inspections. A technical review requires substantial
preparation on the part of the presenters. Documents must be
published and distributed and presentation material organized and
made into slides or overheads. Practice sessions are conducted by
presenters with an audience of critics to prepare for the review.
The reviewers should read the material, attend the
presentations, and write reports. On large projects with many
reviews and walk-throughs involving many participants, a
substantial number of labor hours can be consumed analyzing
documents, attending meetings, and writing reports. For example,
a system design review for one module or unit can require 150
labor hours. When overlooked, this labor can result in a very
large error in resource and schedule estimation.
Many projects include risk assessment and risk
management as a key part of the planning process and expect the
plan toidentify specific risk areas. The plan is expected to
quantify both probability of failure and consequences of failure
and to describe what will be done to contain development risk.

Instruction: Answer questions 31 to 40 based on the following text.
This Chrome extension lets you learn a new language by watching Netflix
01     Learning a new language through immersion doesn’t mean you have to pack your bags and
02 move to Europe for three months. Now, you just need to turn __ Netflix. Language Learning with
03 Netflix is a Chrome extension that lets you watch shows with two subtitles on __ the same time
04 so you can visually pair translations with dialogue and learn some new vocabulary in the process.
05 Its a clever service that makes use of Netflix’s massive catalogue and all of the major languages
06 in which it already offers subtitles, including Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian,
07 Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish.
08     The extension was created by developers David Wilkinson and Ognjen Apic who experimented
09 with making their own language learning software before collaborating on Language Learning with
10 Netflix. “For some languages (Farsi, for example), there’s only a limited amount of learning
11 materials available”, Wilkinson said in an email. “I think a lot of people would enjoy studying a
12 language with material they are already familiar with”.
13     The tool works best as a supplement for people who already have some basic understanding
14 of the language they’re learning. There’s a vocabulary-highlighting feature that greys out less
15 common words, which is adjustable to match your vocabulary level. Hovering over a word
16 produces a pop-up dictionary, and clicking the word lets you hear it. You can also slow down the
17 dialogue or automatically pause playback at the end of every subtitle, so you can learn line by
18 line. There’s even a catalogue of recommendations for movies and shows that are good to study.
19     The Chrome extension is free to use, but Wilkinson and Apic’s product is expected to have
20 more features, like additional subtitles __ dubbed dialogue, which would only be available for paid
21 users. “Netflix has alternative audio tracks for many well-known series, but the subtitles in other
22 languages don’t match the audio”, Wilkinson said. “We’re considering creating new subtitles for
23 these alternative audio tracks, so you could study German, for example, with Breaking Bad with
24 matching German audio and subtitles”.
25     One of the few downsides is that the tool only works on Google Chrome, so you can’t use it
26 with your Netflix app on tablets or streaming services like Roku or Apple TV. Hopefully, the service
27 can make it’s way beyond browsers soon because it’s obvious that the potential __ language
28 learning through media is huge. Viki, a streaming service for Asian dramas, implemented a “Learn
29     Mode” in 2017 that essentially does the same thing by showing two subtitles at once. The
30 developers say they haven’t contacted Netflix yet, but “the project could likely go faster and
31 further with their support”.
