ON–FARM BIOSECURITY: TRAFFIC CONTROL AND

SANITATION.

WHAT IS BIOSECURITY?

In the context of livestock production, biosecurity refers to

those measures taken to keep disease agents out of

populations, herds, or groups of animals where they do not

already exist. Biosecurity measures are implemented on

national, state, and herd levels. Currently, there is heightened

awareness of national biosecurity as the United States attempts

to keep foot–and–mouth disease (FMD) out of its animal

population.

In addition to national concerns, individual states take

measures to prevent the entry/reintroduction of livestock

diseases they have been able to prevent/eliminate from their

herds by setting requirements for arriving animals. Examples

of diseases that are of particular concern to states include

brucellosis, tuberculosis, and pseudorabies.

Herd–level biosecurity usually rests with the herd owner or

management team; they try to exclude any disease that is not

already present in the herd or limit the spread of disease within

the herd. Examples might include Streptococcus agalactiae

mastitis, bovine virus diarrhea, ovine progressive pneumonia,

and swine dysentery. To be successful, biosecurity plans must

address how the group of animals will be isolated away from

other groups, how traffic (movement of people, animals, and

equipment) will be regulated, and how cleaning and disinfection

procedures will be used to reduce pathogen levels.

What are the Greatest Risks of Disease Introduction?

Although infectious disease can be introduced to a farm in

several ways, bringing new animals or animals that have been

commingled with, or exposed to, other animals usually presents

the greatest risk. New herd and flock sires, or replacement

females, are often the way that new genetics are added to the

herd. This seemingly innocent process is a very common way of

introducing new disease–causing organisms. Producers should

attempt to purchase animals from sources with known health

status whenever possible. In addition, they should plan to:

• Isolate for at least two weeks, but preferably a month, all

new arrivals or animals returning to the herd from situations

where they were possibly exposed to other animals such as at

fairs and shows. Isolation should be in a facility completely

separate from the home animals. Outerwear (boots and

coveralls) worn when tending to the quarantined animals should

not be worn while caring for other animals. If complete isolation

is impossible, use a separate pen or pasture that does not

allow nose–to–nose contact or sharing of feed and water

supplies. While the new animals are isolated, testing should

be accomplished for diseases of particular concern; negative

test results should be received before the new animals are

mixed with the resident herd.

• Work with your veterinarian to develop a sound health

program that includes parasite control and vaccination for the

diseases most likely to be encountered in your operation or

management program.

• Isolate animals showing signs of disease to minimize

exposure of the apparently healthy ones. Contact your

veterinarian so that appropriate diagnostic tests and treatment

can be initiated.

Fake news could ruin social media, but there’s still hope

by: Guðrun í Jákupsstovu

Camille Francois, director of research and analysis at Graphika, told the audience of her talk at TNW Conference:

“Disinformation campaigns, or fake news is a concept we’ve known about for years, but few people realize how varied the concept can be and how many forms it comes in. When the first instances of fake news started to surface, they were connected with bots. These flooded conversations with alternative stories in order to create noise and, in turn, silence what was actually being said”.

According to Francois, today’s disinformation campaigns are far more varied than just bots – and much harder to detect. For example, targeted harassment campaigns are carried out against journalists and human-rights activists who are critical of governments or big organizations.

“We see this kind of campaigns happening at large scale in countries like the Philippines, Turkey, Ecuador, and Venezuela. The point of these campaigns is to flood the narrative these people try to create with so much noise that their original message gets silenced, their reputation gets damaged, and their credibility undermined. I call this patriotic trolling.”

There are also examples of disinformation campaigns mobilizing people. This was evident during the US elections in 2016 when many fake events suddenly started popping up on Facebook. One Russian Facebook page “organized” an anti-Islam event, while another “organized” a pro-Islam demonstration. The two fake events gathered activists to the same street in Texas, leading to a stand-off.

Francois explains how amazed she is that, in spite of social media being the main medium for these different disinformation campaigns, actual people also still use it to protest properly.

If we look at countries, like Turkey – where there’s a huge amount of censorship and smear campaigns directed at human right defenders and journalists – citizens around the world and in those places still use social media to denounce corruption, to organize human rights movements and this proves that we still haven’t lost the battle of who owns social media.

This is an ongoing battle, and it lets us recognize the actors who are trying to remove the option for people to use social media for good. But everyday you still have people all over the world turning to social media to support their democratic activities. This gives me hope and a desire to protect people’s ability to use social media for good, for denouncing corruption and protecting human rights. Adapted from:<https://thenextweb.com/socialmedia/2018/05/25/> . British Government to Recruit Teens as Next Generation of Spies

In the 50 years since the first James Bond movie created a lasting impression of a British secret agent, a completely different character is about to emerge. Britain’s intelligence agencies are to recruit their next generation of cyber spies by harnessing the talents of the “Xbox generation”.

In an expansion of a pilot program, Foreign Secretary William Hague announced Thursday that up to 100 18-year-olds will be given the chance to train for a career in Britain’s secret services. The move to recruit school-leavers marks a break with the past, when agencies mainly drew their staff from among university graduates.

“Young people are the key to our country’s future success, just as they were during the War”, Hague said. “Today we are not at war, but I see evidence every day of deliberate, organized attacks against intellectual property and government networks in the United Kingdom.”

The new recruitment program, called the Single Intelligence Account apprenticeship scheme will enable students with suitable qualifications in science, technology or engineering, to spend two years learning about communications, security and engineering through formal education, technical training and work placements.

The purpose of most backup policies is to create a copy of data so that a particular file or application may be restored after data is lost, corrupted, deleted or a disaster strikes. Thus, backup is not the goal, but rather it is one means to accomplish the goal of protecting data. Testing backups is just as important as backing up and restoring data. Backup applications have long offered several types of backup operations. Two of the most common backup types are described below.

I. This operation will result in copying only the data that has changed since the last backup operation of any type. The modified time stamp on files is typically used and compared to the time stamp of the last backup. Backup applications track and record the date and time that backup operations occur in order to track files modified since these operations. Because this backup will only copy data since the last backup of any type, it may be run as often as desired, with only the most recent changes stored.

II. This type of backup makes a copy of all data to another set of media, which can be tape, disk or a DVD or CD. The primary advantage to performing this backup during every operation is that a complete copy of all data is available with a single set of media. This results in a minimal time to restore data, a metric known as a Recovery Time Objective (RTO).

The backup types I and II are, respectivelly,
