The good news about formulating a strong lesson plan for a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) class is that it will contain many of the same features of a good lesson plan for any class. That is, it will include transitions from and to the previous class and the next one, it will warm students up to the day’s lesson in an engaging way, it will present new material and recycle familiar material, it will include some ways to assess progress during the class, and it will be flexible enough to account for classes that move slower or more quickly than you had anticipated.

What’s important about CLIL lesson plans, though, is that you include both subject area content and language points so that you derive the full benefits of a CLIL approach. If you try to wing it, you might wind up concentrating on one area to the detriment of the other.

The key elements of CLIL lesson plans are:

Content – Most teachers find it easiest to start by considering the content. What knowledge – that is, what subject area material – do you want to transmit? How are you going to present it – through an article, a video, a demonstration, a discussion, or an experiment?

It can be helpful when planning to finish sentences such as I want my students to be able to/At the end of the class, they should know… If you have a cooperating content area teacher at your institution, meet with that person in advance to go over your goals and see how they interact with theirs.

Language – Once you have the content pinned down, you can pick out the necessary language and communication skills that students will need to engage with the material. For example, these could include: specialized vocabulary, functional phrases and collocations, pronunciation or intonation practice, grammatical structures, features of text organization.

You’ll find these linguistic features in the texts that you present, but also in the language that students need to complete tasks. Imagine yourself as a student carrying out a task. What will you say? What will you write? Then, determine if you’ll need to teach any of this language to your class before presenting students with the task.

1. You need one copy of the text below for each pair of trainees. Stick the copies around the room. The Reasons Why We Dance


  1. As a choreographer, I get asked to share my opinion about a myriad of dance-related
  2. topics, from the practical, like “How can dance help you get in shape?” to the existential, like “Is
  3. my dancing a projection of my self-image?”. But the question I think matters most is: why do
  4. people dance? What is about moving our bodies to a song we love that is so joyfully Pavlovian?
  5. Why do we watch videos and take lessons on something that could be labeled as trivial? Why do
  6. we love it so?
  7. There are the obvious answers. We dance for physical fitness, mental clarity, emotional
  8. stability, and other such pluses. However, all these benefits could be attained by other means –
  9. though I confess I have yet to find a better alternative than a great “cha cha”* to lift both one’s
  10. heart rate and spirits. There must be something glorious about dancing that is more than just
  11. intangible. We cannot seem to explain it, yet we all know it so well that we do not hesitate to
  12. tap our feet to a Gershwin melody or pulse with the percussion of a samba rhythm.
  13. Perhaps dance is the way we express ourselves when words are insufficient. The joy we
  14. feel over newfound love, the determination we have in the face of great sorrow or adversity, the
  15. passionate fire of our youth, and the peacefulness of our softer and more graceful years – maybe
  16. they are never expressed more fully than through a waltz, or a tango, or a jive. We all want to
  17. be understood, and if we could truly speak the words that describe our feelings, how deep and
  18. powerful they would surely be. But alas, those words never seem to come to us just right. Maybe
  19. dance is simply a translator for the human heart.
  20. Perhaps dance is the medium through which we show the world who we truly are and who
  21. we can be. All of us, if we are honest, believe deep down that we are not ordinary. We know
  22. ourselves to be wonderfully unique, with many layers of personality and talent woven in such a
  23. way that no one on earth could possibly have our same make-up. We know it. We just do not
  24. always know how to prove it. Maybe dance gives us the opportunity. And perhaps dance is how
  25. we choose to remember, how we hold on to the past. It is how we relive __ fun-filled days of
  26. our youth or __ time we looked into their eyes and knew they were the one. It is our tribute to
  27. the heroes of yesterday who jitterbugged like carefree boys and girls, when tomorrow they would

SCHOOL RULES.
The British College of Benalmádena provides its students with an environment in which they can feel safe, cared for and supported, in which they can adequately develop their individual skills, helping them to face the modern world in an autonomous and critical way, preparing them to participate positively in society and in the various professional fields to which they may one day have access.

5. To help their fellow students whenever necessary, to protect the younger ones and be friendly towards everybody is a golden rule for our students.

6. All the school uniform must be worn by all students throughout the school.

7. Students should not bring any valuable items to school. If for any reason they have to do so, they must hand it into the office for safekeeping.

Too many third graders can’t read this sentence

Two-thirds of U.S. third graders face challenges that will impact their future, including academic struggles that could lead to dimmer academic and career prospects. Sadly, only one in three U.S. students demonstrates reading proficiency at the end of third grade. This has alarming consequences for these children, and for our country.

A report released today from the Business Roundtable (BRT) sheds light on this troubling trend in American education, and advises business leaders on how they can help put more children on a path to success.

I’ve heard it said that before third grade, students are learning to read, while after third grade, they’re reading to learn. Grade three is a critical crossroads in a life's journey. If you’ve read this far, then you understand why this is so important. Not enough of our young learners can say the same.

I encourage you to read the BRT report. As you read, please consider ways to help our schools and our teachers keep students on paths to bright futures.

What exactly is education? Academic education doesn't make someone a better person or even a better employee, I would guess that anything we learn in the education process is at the most 10% useful to us as people. Education should teach academia but also life skills such as budgeting, EQ skills, languages etc., all the elements to be a successful person and not necessarily a successful professional.

Who wants a therapist who’s robotic? But a robot therapist?


Imagine feeling overwhelmed and in need of someone to talk to, but no one is available. You have no idea what to do, who to talk to and what to say. Chatbot AI is your new best friend. Essentially, it can take over basic human interaction and problems, answering even the most absurd questions. An artificial intelligence chatbot provides support and guidance. But there are some aspects that AI can not replace, things like having a physical person in front of you. Still, you feel a bit better knowing you have some support. The 1980s were referred to as the rapid “AI boom.” Joseph Weizenbaum, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, developed the first chatbot to simulate an entertaining human conversation. He envisioned it as taking on the persona of a psychotherapist. Its original purpose was “to make machines use language, form abstractions and concepts, solve the kinds of problems now reserved for humans and improve themselves.” Ideally, a user would input a message on an electric typewriter linked to a mainframe, and shortly after, the “psychotherapist” would respond. Decades later, in 2017, chatbots finally became recognized as a stable form of communication. Because of continuous innovations in technology, chatbots have been created as a type of artificial intelligence application that poses as a sort of digital friend that you can lean on.

Foreign language pronunciation instruction

The aim of this research was to examine three important components of foreign language pronunciation instruction and the connections between them: amount, actual practices, and teachers’ beliefs. The data consisted of 45 video-recorded lessons in French-as-a-foreign-language in six secondary schools in Norway and semistructured interviews conducted with the same teachers whose instruction was previously video-recorded. The video-recorded lessons were analysed for amount and actual practices of pronunciation instruction and the interviews were analysed for teachers’ background in and beliefs about phonetics and pronunciation pedagogy. Results indicated that: (1) on average, pronunciation instruction accounted for a very small part of the teaching time (less than 2%); (2) despite the emphasis on segmentals and suprasegmentals in pronunciation teaching literature, explicit teaching of segmental and suprasegmental features of speech was rare in the recorded material; (3) there is a need for more training in and knowledge of phonetics and pronunciation pedagogy. These findings might be used to address concerns regarding the role of pronunciation instruction in foreign language teaching and to define factors that may account for the difficulty of making pronunciation instruction an integral part of language teaching.

How Sleep Strengthens Your Immune System


Numerous studies have reported the benefits of a good night’s sleep, and now researchers from Germany have found that sound sleep improves immune cells known as T cells.

“T cells are a type of… immune cells that fight against intracellular pathogens, for example virus-infected cells such as flu, HIV, herpes, and cancer cells,” Stoyan Dimitrov, PhD, told Healthline.

The study found a new mechanism through which sleep can assist the immune system.

“We show that the stress hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline and pro-inflammatory molecules prostaglandins inhibit the stickiness of a class of adhesion molecules called integrins,” Dr. Dimitrov said. “Because the levels of adrenaline, noradrenaline, and prostaglandins are low during sleep time, the stickiness of the integrins is stronger. This stickiness is important because in order for T cells to kill virus-infected cells or cancer cells, they need to get in direct contact with them, and the integrin stickiness is known to promote this contact.”

When cells in the body recognize a virally infected cell, they activate integrins, a sticky type of protein, that then allows them to attach to and kill infected cells.

The researchers compared T cells from healthy volunteers who either slept or stayed awake all night.

They found that in the study participants who slept, their T cells showed higher levels of integrin activation than in the T cells of those who were awake.

The findings indicate that sleep has the potential to improve T cell functioning. For people who get poor sleep, stress hormones may inhibit the ability of T cells to function as effectively.

Less than five hours sleep per night on a regular basis is associated with higher mortality, and having less than seven hours sleep for three nights in a row has the same effect on the body as missing one full night of sleep.

Poor sleep can increase inflammation, blood pressure, insulin resistance, cortisol, weight gain, and cardiovascular disease, as well as decrease blood sugar regulation.

Despite numerous studies proving the negative health impacts of poor sleep, experts say many people still don’t prioritize getting enough sleep.

Russia and Qatar awarded 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups


The FIFA Executive Committee has chosen Russia to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup™, while the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ was awarded to Qatar. FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter announced the result of the FIFA Executive Committee's secret vote on Thursday 2 December 2010 in Zurich’s Messe. In lauding the victorious nations, the FIFA President also made a point of praising those who missed out. He said: “have to say thanks to the Executive Committee of FIFA because for 2018 and 2022 we go to new lands, because the FIFA World Cup has never been in Eastern Europe or the Middle East. So, I'm a happy president when we speak of the development of football.
"But I have to give big compliments to all the bidders for the big job they have done and the messages they have delivered. All have delivered the message that football is more than just a game. Football is not only about winning; it is also a school of life where you must learn to lose, and that is not easy.”
England, Netherlands and Belgium, Spain and Portugal, and Russia all submitted bids for the right to stage the 2018 finals. Both England and Spain are previous FIFA World Cup hosts, with the 1966 tournament on English soil ending in the Three Lions' only world crown to date.
