Não consegue trabalhar sem um cafezinho? Isso poderia ser um problema se você fosse um atleta olímpico. Entre 1984 e 2003, cafeína em excesso era proibida nas Olimpíadas. Era, inclusive, considerada como doping.

A proibição começou nas Olimpíadas de Los Angeles, em 1984, e continuou ativa até as Olimpíadas de Sydney, em 2000. A substância teve que ser proibida pela Agência Mundial Antidoping nos anos 1980 porque alguns esportistas estavam ingerindo altas doses de cafeína pura para elevar seu desempenho na competição.

O café proibido não era o café normal, daquele que você toma na padaria. Cafeína pura é um suplemento para dar mais energia para praticantes de esportes. Em 1984, a substância foi proibida se ultrapassasse o nível de 15 microgramas por mililitro de urina. Já no ano seguinte, o valor foi reduzido para 12 microgramas.

A proibição não durou por muito tempo. Mesmo em doses pequenas, menores do que o proibido pela Agência Mundial Antidoping, a cafeína já é capaz de melhorar o desempenho atlético de alguém, dando mais disposição naquele momento e adiando o cansaço. Mas esses desempenhos são tímidos comparados a outras formas de doping.

A cafeína não apresenta grandes benefícios e está presente na dieta de grande parte dos atletas, então dificilmente poderia atuar como um diferencial na competição.

Outra coisa que dificultava a proibição era como decidir o que era uma quantidade abusiva de cafeína. Os níveis da substância no xixi variam de acordo com muitos fatores: momento da ingestão, massa corporal, purificação realizada pelo metabolismo, hidratação, o sexo do atleta e se ele faz uso habitual de cafeína.

Às vezes, uma quantidade muito pequena de cafeína ingerida poderia ser excretada sem qualquer alteração. Ou seja, a cafeína continua na urina na mesma quantidade que a inicial, dando uma impressão errada de um efeito intenso quando, na verdade, ela só entrou e saiu do corpo.

Não dá para dizer, com certeza, quantas xícaras de café te fariam ser banido dos Jogos Olímpicos, porque isso depende de todos esses outros fatoresindividuais e variáveis. Uma estimativa diz que seriam necessários oito expressos em algumas horas.

Por causa da dificuldade em medir a influência da cafeína de forma justa e objetiva, a Agência Mundial Antidoping a retirou da lista de substâncias proibidas em 2003.

A cafeína não é mais proibida, mas ainda é monitorada pela organização antidoping. Isso quer dizer que eles ainda tentam identificar indícios de abuso e se atentar para a possibilidade da substância ser usada de forma desonesta no futuro.
