IS A VEGAN DIET HEALTHY?

As a registered nutritionist, the question “Is the vegan diet healthy?” is one I get all the time, especially at this time of year.

Frustratingly, the answer is that it depends as much on what you eat as with any other diet. Someone living purely on ready salted crisps or chips, for example, would be technically following a vegan diet, but it would in no way be healthy.

However, research shows that there are potential benefits to a vegan diet. A recent study indicated that the average vegan diet is higher in vitamin C and fibre, and lower in saturated fat than one containing meat. In addition, statistics show that vegans have a lower BMI (height-to-weight ratio) than meat eaters – in other words, they are skinnier.

You see, a diet without any meat or dairy products is likely to contain a lot less saturated fat, which is related to increased cholesterol levels and increased risk of heart disease. We also know that fat contains more calories per gram than other foods, and so vegans may consume fewer calories as a result. Finally, a vegan diet is generally thought to contain more cereals, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds than a non¬vegan diet.

Sounds great right? Not quite. In terms of micronutrients, a vegan diet is actually more susceptible to being nutritionally poor. A vegan diet is naturally low in calcium, vitamin D, iron, vitamin B12, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids. Therefore, if you follow a vegan diet it is essential that you get enough of these nutrients through specific vegan food sources – and may even need to take additional supplements. In our features we also have this traditional hummus recipe, which contains tahini – a good source of calcium, zinc and iron, which are all micronutrients hard to get a hold of on a vegan diet.

So there you have it: going vegan does not necessarily mean you are going to be healthier. In fact, I think that much of the improvement in diets among vegans is a result of education rather than going meat free. In other words, if someone chooses to go vegan they are more likely to care about what they are eating and therefore are more likely to educate themselves on the types of foods they should and should not be eating.

Em certas regiões da África, a frequência de um alelo que causa a anemia falciforme (ou siclemia) tornou-se muito alta. Esse alelo produz uma hemoglobina anormal. Os indivíduos homozigotos que possuem esses dois alelos apresentam anemia e problemas circulatórios que podem ser fatais. Os heterozigotos (indivíduos com um alelo que condiciona a anemia e outro alelo normal) ou não tem a doença ou têm em forma branda, sem prejuízos à sobrevivência. Além disso, eles são resistentes à malária, doença comum nessa região da África, provocada pela protozoário plasmódio, que parasita o fígado e as hemácias, causando a destruição dessas células. Os heterozigotos são resistentes porque os parasitas consomem o oxigênio da hemácia infectada, o que facilita a aglutinação da hemoglobina e promove a formação de hemácias em meia – lua, característica da doença. Essas hemácias com má – formação serão destruídas pelo baço antes que o parasita complete seu desenvolvimento. Assim, os indivíduos heterozigotos têm vantagens sobre as pessoas sem alelos para a anemia falciforme, pois estas podem contrair a doença, e sobre os portadores de alelos para a anemia falciforme em homozigose, pois eles morrem cedo. A sobrevivência dos heterozigotos garante, naquelas regiões africanas, uma frequência maior de indivíduos heterozigotos do que em regiões onde não há malária. Dessa forma, poder-se-ia esperar que, uma vez erradicada a malária, a frequência do alelo para a anemia diminuísse. Porém, apesar do uso de inseticidas e de outras medidas, a erradicação total da malária nas regiões endêmicas é muito difícil. Um estudo mostrou que a frequência do alelo para a anemia falciforme na população dos Estados Unidos vinda de regiões malarígenas da África diminuiu para 4,2%. A maioria dessa população emigrou das regiões malarígenas da África ocidental há cerca de trezentos anos, e nessas regiões a frequência do alelo é de 12%. Portanto, a mudança de ambiente exerceu uma influência sobre o alelo para a anemia falciforme e diminuiu sua frequência na população

Beasley added that the number of people experiencing "shock hunger" had increased from 80 million to 325 million over the same period. They are classified as living in crisis levels of food insecurity, a term he described as "marching towards starvation and you don’t know where your next meal is coming from". "The economic factors we have today are much worse than those we saw 15 years ago," he said, adding that if the crisis was not addressed, it would result in "famine, destabilisation of nations and mass migration". "We are already seeing riots in Sri Lanka and protests in Tunisia, Pakistan and Peru, and we’ve had destabilisation take place in places like Burkina Faso, Mali, Chad," said Beasley. "This is only a sign of things to come."
Ukraine’s agriculture ministry says more than 20m tonnes of grain that would normally be exported is trapped in the country because of Russia’s blockade of its Black Sea ports. European leaders, including the French president, Emmanuel Macron, have urged Russia to ease its blockade of Odesa, Ukraine’s main port, to allow exports of grain.
In the long term, Beasley called on the world’s richest people to commit more of their wealth to tackling global hunger, while also urging Vladimir Putin to open up Odesa. "It is a very, very frightening time," said Beasley. "We are facing hell on earth if we do not respond immediately. The best thing we can do right now is end that damn war in Russia and Ukraine and get the port open."

Food insecurity hits nearly 60% of Brazilians, study shows.

A study from the Brazilian Research Network on Food Sovereignty and Security released Wednesday showed that 58.7% of Brazilians lived with food insecurity, which replicated data not seen since 1993. In other words, 125.2 million people are affected by this issue, while 15% of the population, or about 33 million people, go hungry on a daily basis.
The document also highlighted that this phenomenon was a consequence of the country’s economic crisis and the ensuing labor market situation. The survey consisted of interviews conducted between November 2021 and April this year in 12,745 households across 577 municipalities in all states. Compared to 2018, the increase in the Brazilian population with food insecurity is 60% and since 2020 this figure grew by 7.2%.
It was the second National Survey on Food Insecurity in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil and showed that the daily victims of hunger increased from 19 to 33 million from 2021 to 2022. The most affected areas of the country are the North and Northeast, with 25.7% and 21% of the families involved, respectively. The report also revealed that 60% of households in rural areas are food insecure, with 18.6% of them in the most severe state. Hunger also affected 21.8% of the families of small agricultural producers.

The study also focused on investigating the relationship between food and race and confirmed that access to food is not a problem for 53.2% of the households of self-declared white people, but this percentage drops to 35% in the homes of self-declared black people. In these families, the percentage of people who suffer from a lack of food on a daily basis increased from 10.4% to 18.1%. The situation worsened in households managed by black women, of which 63% showed some degree of insecurity.

According to the survey, in 2022, one out of three Brazilians did something that caused shame, sadness or regret in order to obtain food. "We have gone back 30 years in the fight against hunger, it’s scary. But the current indignant movement is far from the indignation of 1993 with 32 million hungry people. We are inert as a society," explained Kiko Afonso, one of the members of the team to conduct the study.

What is domestic violence and abuse?

When people think of domestic abuse, they often focus on domestic violence. But domestic abuse occurs whenever one person in an intimate relationship or marriage tries to dominate and control the other person. Domestic violence and abuse are used for one purpose and one purpose only: to gain and maintain total control over you. An abuser doesn’t “play fair.” Abusers use fear, guilt, shame, and intimidation to wear you down and keep you under their thumb. Your abuser may also threaten you, hurt you, or hurt those around you.

Domestic violence and abuse do not discriminate. Abuse happens among heterosexual couples and in same-sex partnerships. It occurs within all age ranges, ethnic backgrounds, and economic levels. And while women are more commonly victimized, men are also abused – especially verbally and emotionally. The bottom line is that abusive behavior is never acceptable, whether it’s coming from a man, a woman, a teenager, or an older adult.
