Genetically Modified Foods, Pros and Cons.
Genetically modified foods (GMs)are becoming increasingly coirtmon in many countries. However, before one opts for any of these foods, it is very important to know about their pros and cons.
There are a variety of reasons for developing GMs. For instance, some foods are genetically modified to prevent the occurrence of allergies after consumption, while some are developed to improve their shelf life.
Though the seeds of GMs are quite expensive, their cost of production is said to be lesser than that of the traditional crops for these foods do have natural resistance towards damaging pests and insects. This reduces the necessity of exposing crops to hazardous Chemicals. It is also said that GMs grow faster. Due to this, productivity increases, providing the population with more food. At times, GMs crops can be grown at places with unfavorable climatic conditions whereas a normal crop can grow only in specific season or under some favorable climatic conditions.
The biggest threat caused by GMs is that they can have harmful effects on the human body. It is believed that they can cause diseases which are immune to antibiotics. Moreover, according to some experts, people who consume such foods have high chances of developing câncer. Besides, not much is known about their long-term effects on human beings.
In many countries, manufacturers do not mention on the labei that foods are genetically modified because they think that this would affect their business. However, this is not a good practice as consumers do not get the chance to decide whether they should really opt for these foods, Experts are of the opinion that with the increase of genetically modified foods, developing countries would start depending more on industrial countries because it is likely that the food production would be controlled by them in the time to come.

No princípio eram as árvores


Os livros são filhos das árvores, que foram o primeiro lar da nossa espécie e, talvez, o mais antigo receptáculo das palavras escritas. A etimologia da palavra contém um velho relato sobre os primórdios. Em latim, líber, que significa "livro", originariamente dava nome à casca da árvore ou, mais exatamente, à película fibrosa que separa a casca da madeira do tronco. Plínio, o Velho, afirma que os romanos escreviam em cascas de árvore antes de conhecer os rolos egípcios. Durante muitos séculos, diversos materiais - o papiro, o pergaminho - ocuparam o lugar daquelas antigas páginas de madeira, mas, numa viagem de ida e volta, com adoção do papel, os livros voltaram a nascer das árvores.

Como eu já expliquei, os gregos chamavam o livro de biblíon, rememorando a cidade fenícia de Biblos, famosa pela exportação de papiro. Atualmente o emprego dessa palavra, em sua evolução, ficou reduzido ao título de uma única obra, a Bíblia. Para os romanos, líber não evocava cidades nem rotas comerciais, mas o mistério do bosque onde seus antepassados começaram a escrever, em meio aos sussurros do vento nas folhas. Os nomes germânicos - book, Buch, boek - também descendem de uma palavra arbórea: a faia de tronco esbranquiçado.

Em latim, o termo que significa "livro" tem quase o mesmo som que o adjetivo que significa "livre", embora as raízes indo-europeias de ambos os vocábulos tenham origens diferentes. Muitas línguas neolatinas, como o espanhol, o francês, o italiano e o português, herdaram a coincidência dessa semelhança fonética, que convida ao jogo de palavras, identificando leitura e liberdade. Para os iluministas de todas as épocas, são duas paixões que sempre acabam confluindo.

Hoje aprendemos a escrever com luz sobre telas de cristal líquido ou de plasma, mas ainda ouvimos o chamado originário das árvores. Em suas cascas redigimos um disperso inventário amoroso da humanidade. Antonio Machado, em seus passeios pelos Campos de Castela, costumava parar junto ao rio para ler algumas linhas desse livro dos amantes:

Estes choupos do rio, que acompanham

Quando um adolescente risca duas iniciais com a ponta do canivete na casca prateada de um álamo, reproduz, sem saber, um gesto muito antigo. Calímaco, o bibliotecário de Alexandria, já menciona no século Ili a.C. uma mensagem amorosa numa árvore. Não é o único. Um personagem de Virgílio imagina como a casca, com o passar dos anos, irá se alargar e corroer seu nome e o dela: "E gravar meus amores nas jovens árvores; crescerão as árvores e com elas crescerão vocês, amores meus." Talvez o costume, ainda vivo, de tatuar letras na pele de uma árvore para conservar a lembrança de alguém que viveu e amou tenha sido um dos episódios mais antigos de escrita na Europa. Talvez, à beira de um rio que corre e passa e sonha, como dizia Machado, os antigos gregos e romanos tenham escrito os primeiros pensamentos e as primeiras palavras de amor. Sabe-se lá quantas dessas árvores acabaram se transformando em livros.

Too many third graders can’t read this sentence

Two-thirds of U.S. third graders face challenges that will impact their future, including academic struggles that could lead to dimmer academic and career prospects. Sadly, only one in three U.S. students demonstrates reading proficiency at the end of third grade. This has alarming consequences for these children, and for our country.

A report released today from the Business Roundtable (BRT) sheds light on this troubling trend in American education, and advises business leaders on how they can help put more children on a path to success.

I’ve heard it said that before third grade, students are learning to read, while after third grade, they’re reading to learn. Grade three is a critical crossroads in a life's journey. If you’ve read this far, then you understand why this is so important. Not enough of our young learners can say the same.

I encourage you to read the BRT report. As you read, please consider ways to help our schools and our teachers keep students on paths to bright futures.

Thanks for sharing. With two young children, I increasingly think about the importance of early childhoodeducation. Pre-k care is far too inaccessible, ultimately magnifying inequality from the earliest stages of life.

What exactly is education? Academic education doesn't make someone a better person or even a better employee, I would guess that anything we learn in the education process is at the most 10% useful to us as people. Education should teach academia but also life skills such as budgeting, EQ skills, languages etc., all the elements to be a successful person and not necessarily a successful professional.

As the Olympics Approaches, a Lesson in Overcoming Adversity

I've known a lot of athletes who qualified for the Olympic Games ,______injuries. But I know of only one who qualified because of an injury.

Cliff Meidl’s story captures the spirit of the Olympics.

In November 1986, Cliff, a 20-year-old plumber's apprentice, hit three buried high-voltage electrical cables with a jackhammer. An estimated 30,000 volts surged through his body, exploding bone and cartilage from the inside ail the way up to his head. To put that into perspective, electric chairs use only 1500-2000 volts for executions. So it's safe to say that Cliff should have died.

And he nearly did. His heart stopped. Paramedics were able to get it going again, but they had to resuscitate him on the way to the hospital.

As part of a team with renowned plastic surgeon Malcolm Lesavoy, MD, and others, I got to work reconstructing Cliffs legs. Our best hope was to avoid amputation.

But very quickly, we noticed something else going on - something that had nothing to do with our expertise. Through every step of his painful rehabilitation, Cliff grew more and more determined. He never complained. He just asked, "What's next?"

Before he had even finished the rehabilitation, Cliff started paddling various watercrafts. The days spent on crutches had already strengthened his upper body, and he took naturally to the sport. The same year in which he was injured, he began competing in canoe and kayak events, and in 1996 he qualified for the Olympics - not the Paralympic Games, the Olympic Games.

Four years later, in Sydney, Australia, I was overseeing the sports medicine team at the Olympic soccer tournament. I was sitting in the stands during the opening ceremonies when Cliff walked into the Olympic Stadium carrying the Stars and Stripes.

It's a long-standing tradition for delegations of athletes to select one among their number to bear the flag, and the choice often symbolizes some extraordinary accomplishment. I had no idea that Cliff would be selected. So when he strode into the stadium with a normal gait, I nearly broke down.

Moments like that reinforce what I have always believed: that sport can bring out the best in us all.

The Olympic Games (...) are devoted to celebrating the human capacity to improve body, mind, and soul.

They are about taking part - not necessarily about winning. Cliffs peers in the US delegation of 2000 recognized that when they elected him to bear the nation's colors. He never won a medal at the games, but the spirit with which he overcame adversity inspired all of them.

The Olympic motto - faster, higher, stronger - can help our patients realize that the real victory is the "win within." The Win Within: Capturing Your Victorious Spirit is the name of the book I wrote to show people that coming back from adversity is part of our heritage - that we as humanbeings are more adapted to adversity than we are to success.

Adversity is the engine of unimagined opportunity. It can unleash our energy and stimulate our will. It moves us to succeed. If I don’t have food, I have to go get some. If I’m cold, I have to build a shelter.

I remind patients who don't participate in sports that they have the heritage of athletes. We all have the genes of pursuit-hunters who survived by running down their prey and running away from their predators. That's why even now, in 2016, when we go out and take a run, we feel good. We get an endorphin surge and our lipids go down. Our hearts and brains become clear.

The life of sport and sport of life are interlinked. Exercise is our birthright; it's our legacy; it's why we are here.

We no longer have to fear saber-toothed tigers or cave bears. But when you look today at how people can be successful in 2016, it's by avoiding the predators in our urban life: overeating, inactivity, and smoking. And it's by rising to meet adversity.

LeGrand is among a small group of female officers who are training at sites including Groton, Connecticut, to join the elite submarine force beginning later this year. While the Navy says it is not treating them any differently from their male counterparts, officials have been working to prepare the submarine crews — and the sailors1 wives — for one of the most dramatic changes in the 111-year history of the Navy’s "silent Service."
The change is a source of anxiety for others, including the wives of submariners, who worry the close contact at sea could lead to sailors' cheating. The issue really has to do with the creation of a relationship that becomes very close and then results in further relations ashore. That is, of course, what bothers the wives. "They know the kind of relationships that happens between the shipmates", said retired Navy Rear Adm. W . J. Holland Jr., a former submarine commander.
The initial class of 24 women will be divided among four submarines, where they will be outnumbered by men by a ratio of roughly 1 to 25. The enlisted ranks, which make up about 90 percent of a sub's 160-sailor crew, are not open to women although the Navy is exploring modifications to create separate bunks for men and women.
The female officers, many of them engineering graduates from Annapolis, are accustomed to being in the minority, and so far they say they hardly feel like outsiders. The nuclear power school that is part of their training, for example, has been open to women for years because the Navy in 1994 reversed a ban on females serving on its surface ships, including nuclear-powered vesseis.

Sou marinheiro porque um dia, muito jovem, estendi meu braço diante da bandeira e jurei lhe dar minha vida.

Naquele dia de sol a pino, com meu novo uniforme branco, senti-me homem de verdade, como se estivesse dando adeus aos tempos de garoto. Ao meu lado, as vozes de outros jovens soavam em uníssono com a minha, vibrantes, e terminamos com emoção, de peitos estufados e orgulhosos. Ao final, minha mãe veio em minha direção, apressada em me dar um beijo. Acariciou-me o rosto e disse que eu estava lindo de uniforme. O dia acabou com a família em festa; eu lembro-me bem, fiquei de uniforme até de tarde...

Sou marinheiro, porque aprendi, naquela Escola, o significado nobre de companheirismo. Juntos no sofrimento e na alegria, um safando o outro, leais e amigos. Aprendi o que é civismo, respeito e disciplina, no princípio, exigidos a cada dia; depois, como parte do meu ser e, assim, para sempre. A cada passo havia um novo esforço esperando e, depois dele, um pequeno sucesso. Minha vida, agora que olho para trás, foi toda de pequenos sucessos. A soma deles foi a minha carreira.

O navio passou a ser minha segunda casa, onde eu permanecia mais tempo, às vezes, do que na primeira. Conhecia todos, alguns mais até do que meus parentes. Sabia de suas manhas, cacoetes, preocupações e de seus sonhos. Sem dar conta, meu mundo acabava no costado do navio.

A soma de tudo que fazemos e vivemos, pelo navio, é uma das coisas mais belas, que só há entre nós, em mais nenhum outro lugar. Por isso sou marinheiro, porque sei o que é espírito de navio.

Bons tempos aqueles das viagens, dávamos um duro danado no mar, em serviço, postos de combate, adestramento de guerra, dia e noite. O interessante é que em toda nossa vida, quando buscamos as boas recordações, elas vêm desse tempo, das viagens e dos navios. Até as durezas por que passamos são saborosas ao lembrar, talvez porque as vencemos e fomos adiante.

É aquela história dos pequenos sucessos.

A volta ao porto era um acontecimento gostoso, sempre figurando a mulher. Primeiro a mãe, depois a namorada, a noiva, a esposa. Muita coisa a contar, a dizer, surpresas de carinho. A comida preferida, o abraço apertado, o beijo quente... e o filho que, na ausência, foi ensinado a dizer papai.

No início, eu voltava com muitos retratos, principalmente quando vinha do estrangeiro, depois, com o tempo, eram poucos, até que deixei de levar a máquina. Engraçado, vocês já perceberam que marinheiro velho dificilmente baixa a terra com máquina fotográfica? Foi assim comigo.

Hoje os navios são outros, os marinheiros são outros - sinto-os mais preparados do que eu era - mas a vida no mar, as viagens, os portos, a volta, estou certo de que são iguais. Sou marinheiro, por isso sei como é.

Fico agora em casa, querendo saber das coisas da Marinha. E a cada pedaço que ouço de um amigo, que leio, que vejo, me dá um orgulho que às vezes chega a entalar na garganta. Há pouco tempo, voltei a entrar em um navio. Que coisa linda! Sofisticado, limpíssimo, nas mãos de uma tripulação que só pode ser muito competente para mantê-lo pronto. Do que me mostraram eu não sabia muito. Basta dizer que o último navio em que servi já deu baixa. Quando saí de bordo, parei no portaló, voltei-me para a bandeira, inclinei a cabeça... e, minha garganta entalou outra vez.

Isso é corporativismo; não aquele enxovalhado, que significa o bem de cada um, protegido à custa do desmerecimento da instituição; mas o puro, que significa o bem da instituição, protegido pelo merecimento de cada um.

Sou marinheiro e, portanto, sou corporativista.

Muitas vezes a lembrança me retorna aos dias da ativa e morro de saudades. Que bom se pudesse voltar ao começo, vestir aquele uniforme novinho - até um pouco grande, ainda recordo - Jurar Bandeira, ser beijado pela minha falecida mãe...

Sei que, quando minha hora chegar, no último instante, verei, em velocidade desconhecida, o navio com meus amigos, minha mulher, meusfilhos, singrando para sempre, indo aonde o mar encontra o céu... e, se São Pedro estiver no portaló, direi:

Facebook is still growing fast in South America. Monthly visitors in Brazil were up to 6% in the last month to 70m, according to Socialbakers, whose Information is used by Facebook advertisers. India has seen a 4% rise to 64m - still only a fraction of the country's population, so there is room for more growth.

As Facebook itself has warned, the time spent on its pages from those sitting in front of personal computers is decreasing fast because people now prefer to use their smartphones and tablets. Although smartphone minutes have doubled in a year, to 69 a month, that growth may not compensate for dwindling desktop usage.

Facebook will tell investors about its performance for the quarter. Wall Street expects revenues of about $1.44bn, an increase from $1.06bn a year ago. Shareholders will want to know how fast the number of mobile Facebook users is growing, and whether advertising revenues are increasing at the same rate. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has created a series of new initiatives designed to appeal to smartphone users. One initiative, Facebook Home, is software that can be downloaded onto Android phones to feed news and photos from friends - and advertising - directly to the owner's locked home screen.
