Certa vez, ao pedir informações, um rapaz confundiu esquerda com direita. Isso me fez pensar na dificuldade que muitos tem em se orientar no espaço — e, quem sabe, no tempo também.

Vi isso no meu neto Guilherme, de três anos, aprendendo com entusiasmo os sentidos de frente, trás, direita. Mas mesmo nós, adultos, às vezes, erramos o rumo. Olhamos para frente, mas enxergamos para trás.

A captação de água de neblina em grande escala pode fornecer água potável a algumas das cidades mais secas do mundo.

Foi isso que pesquisadores no Chile concluíram depois de estudar o potencial da coleta de neblina na cidade desértica de Alto Hospicio, no norte do país.

A precipitação média na região é inferior a cinco milímetros por ano. Para efeito de comparação, a pluviosidade média da cidade de São Paulo é superior a mil milímetros.

"A cidade também apresenta muitos problemas sociais", diz a principal pesquisadora do estudo, Virginia Carter Gamberini, da Universidade Mayor, no Chile.

Sem acesso a redes de abastecimento de água, as pessoas nas favelas dependem da água potável que é entregue por caminhões.

Conforme os pesquisadores, as nuvens de neblina que se acumulam regularmente sobre a cidade montanhosa são uma fonte inexplorada de água.

Capturar a água da neblina é extremamente simples. Uma malha é pendurada entre postes e, quando as nuvens carregadas de umidade passam por essa malha fina, gotículas se formam. A água é, então, canalizada para tubulações e tanques de armazenamento.

Este método tem sido usado em pequena escala há várias décadas, principalmente em zonas rurais da América do Sul e Central em locais com as condições adequadas de neblina.

Um dos maiores sistemas de coleta de água de neblinaestá no Marrocos, às margens do Deserto do Saara.

No entanto, Gamberini diz que uma nova era de coleta de neblina em escala muito maior forneceria um abastecimento de água mais seguro e sustentável em ambientes urbanos, onde é mais necessário. Ela e seus colegas realizaram avaliações de quanta água pode ser produzida pela coleta de neblina, e combinaram essas informações com estudos de formação de nuvens em imagens de satélite e com previsões meteorológicas.

A partir disso, concluíram que as nuvens que se formam regularmente sobre o Pacífico, e que são sopradas pela cidade costeira montanhosa, forneceriam aos moradores das favelas de Alto Hospicio uma fonte sustentável de água potável.

A neblina de Alto Hospicio se forma sobre o Oceano Pacífico quando o ar quente e úmido flui sobre a água fria, e depois é soprada sobre as montanhas. As condições confiáveis de neblina permitiram que Gamberini e seus colegas identificassem as áreas onde os maiores volumes de água poderiam ser coletados regularmente das nuvens.

A água de neblina poderia ser usada para agricultura hidropônica, técnica de cultivo sem a necessidade de solo, com a produção de quinze a vinte quilos de verduras e hortaliças em um mês.
