[Os altos níveis de nióbio, háfnio, alumínio, cobre, lítio, prata, ferro, chumbo, magnésio, titânio, berílio, cromo, níquel² e zinco] foram associados à reentrada de satélites³ artificiais e foguetes na atmosfera terrestre. Quando voltam à Terra, os veículos produzem vapores metálicos que se condensam em aerossóis. Nesse levantamento, 10% das partículas de ácido sulfúrico da estratosfera com o mínimo de 120 nanômetros4 de diâmetro continham pelo menos um entre os 20 elementos químicos provenientes da reentrada de satélites, já que a quantidade desses metais excedia a que chega com a poeira cósmica. A situação, de consequências incertas, pode se intensificar, porque há 9 mil satélites de órbita5 terrestre baixa em operação e outros 50 mil devem ser colocados em órbita até 2030 (PNAS, 16 de outubro).
